Nike Hyper Court is an on-court coach bot, where Players can now talk to the court and get the custom training program served up to them without using mobile data. This empowered thousands of Filipino ballers with invaluable training to raise the game on the street.

Despite basketball being the national sport of the Philippines, the country ranks 31st globally, with no aspiring players making it to the NBA. Recognising this gap, Nike aims to transform the landscape by introducing a training platform that is accessible to everyone, empowering Filipino talent to rise to the global stage.

The Idea

To address this issue, Nike and Google have collaborated on an innovative solution: the integration of Google's Wi-Fi technology in basketball courts. This advancement provides children with complimentary WIFI access to a personalized coaching bot. Covering everything from ball handling to shooting techniques, this bot offers tailored guidance, allowing young athletes to enhance their skills one conversation at a time.

Results

  • 37,000 ballers trained
  • 20% of them return weekly
  • Over 40% of our users are female
  • Received a D&AD Pencil award for brand experience

Design Approach

As our users are mainly youths, we designed the app using inspiration from games and comics. We researched old-school RPG games and incorporated gaming elements into our design. Graphic UI are conceptualised in drawings, and with the help of famed illustrator Arturo Torres, brought the illustrations to life.

Design Principles

Speak their language
Since we are not designing for an adult, we kept the design focused on what youths will be familiar with. Most importantly, it should be fun and engaging.
Keep it simple
The design should be idiot-proof, rid of any complexity. The user experience should be as simple as possible - a single click will bring the user to the desired point. Always remember, their attention span is short.
Delightful experience
Children love fun interaction, whether from micro-interaction or animation - the app is filled with delightful moments that surprise them.

"Over the past months, the impact of the programme has been monitored and the results have been extremely positive.
The completion rate is high and the number of active users is growing at a healthy rate. We heard one user even managed to join a professional league after undergoing the training."

Facilitating development

Collaborating with an offshore development team can be challenging due to potential differences in design interpretation. To address this, I created a comprehensive design guide to establish a shared understanding, ensuring alignment throughout the development process.
